Vince Matero will be the Grand Marshall of Crotons Summerfest parade this year, and he is just five years short of earning his centenarian status. Matero was born in Croton in 1916, and lived here his entire life.
Matero now lives near Springvale, near Montrose, and is most surprised by the growth of Croton. You cant get a parking space on Grand Street, said Matero. With growth came events that changed Croton, and Materos life too, When I was a kid the doors were always open. You could do almost anything without getting in trouble.
Matero is a veteran of World War II, although as a member of the Navy he never saw combat. He has been a member of the American Legion in Croton, Fox Ecloff Post 505, for 58 years. A true "Croton boy," as he put it, he worked for the railroad for 44 years, and has enjoyed a 32-year retirement.
Although health reasons caused Matero to stop golfing five years ago, at age 90, he still drives. He has one granddaughter, she is 35 years old, and his two daughters who still live nearby. Matero claims that he doesnt know why he was chosen for the Grand Marshall if the Summerfest parade, although to most it would seem clear he is a truly dedicated Croton resident.
