After firefighters investigated the wreckage, they only located three of the four bodies of the dogs. Fire officials now believe that 10-year-old Nero, a black Newfoundland with a white chest, escaped the fire and has been spotted around Oregon Road in Cortlandt Manor.
The Sunday morning fire displaced the five members of the Elisio family and reportedly killed the family's four dogs. Quick-thinking neighbors Brian Avery and Joshua Reed saved Maria Elisio, who recently underwent hip replacement surgery, from the roof of their porch using a 20-foot ladder.
Marie Elisio, the eldest daughter, credited Nero for waking her up and saving her family's lives.
Nero responds to his name and "Cookie," if you offer him a treat. If you spot Nero, call Lost Pets of the Hudson Valley at (914) 261-5997.
