Minivan Crashes Into Panera Bread in Cortlandt

CORTLANDT, N.Y.--Workers at the Panera Bread restaurant in the Cortlandt Town Center in Mohegan Lake were cleaning up after a minivan crashed into the popular eatery's window.

The incident happened around 9:45 a.m.Sunday when a man, who appeared to be middle age according to store assistant manager Tonya Savino, was driving a 2009 blue Volkswagon Suburban, lost control of his vehicle and careened into the front of the building, shattering glass and bricks from the building's exterior.

There were approximately two dozen customers inside the eatery at the time of the accident and six employees.

"It was extremely calm considering what happened," Savino said of the mood inside, noting everyone evacuated safely.

General Manager Sean Stefanicki said there was a family with young kids sitting at a table in front of the window. No one was injured . Others, he said ,were sitting at a nearby table in the front of the building. They were shaken up but otherwise uninjured.

The restaurant was closed for business on Sunday. Stefanicki said he's hopeful the window that was shattered and another window that was cracked would be repaired shortly. He's also hoping to have Town Building and company officials take a closer look at the front of the building to determine if there was any structural damage.

The van's driver, who State Police would not identify, was unavailable for comment, although none of the vehicle's occupants were injured. Police are still investigating. The vehicle was towed by Hilltop and Mohegan Fire Department officials were also on hand to assist.
