July 4th Crowd Likely at Croton's Silver Lake Park

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—Silver Lake, a sandy beach at the edge of the Croton River, reached capacity on Memorial Day Weekend, and will likely reach capacity again during the weekend leading up to the Fourth of July on Monday.

“Sometimes we’ll get a pretty busy crowd,” said lifeguard Jeremiah Meyers, who has worked at Silver Lake Park for six years, “everyone’s making a lot of noise, it can get pretty chaotic.” Regardless of the fact that watching 125 people on a small beach can be stressful, Meyers says that “it’s really enjoyable working down here any day of the year.”

Dustin Schmidt, who is in his second year as lifeguard supervisor said that Silver Lake Park is like “a little Jones Beach,” when it’s completely full. “The hardest part of our job,” said Meyers, “is turning people away when we’re at capacity.”

Silver Lake Park will be open until 8:30 p.m. on the Fourth of July to accommodate late swimmers. Patrons should be wary of isolated thunderstorms on Independence Day, and note that when thunder does sound, swimmers will be asked to get out of the water and return to their cars until 30 minutes has passed with no sound of thunder.
