Indian Point's Closing Raises New Worries

ALBANY, N.Y. -- State Democrats and Republicans sought assurances Tuesday that shuttering the Indian Point nuclear power plant will not affect the state's power supply, according to The New York Times.

Indian Point is set to close completely by 2021. On Tuesday, state lawmakers questioned energy officials and the plant's owners about the financial and logistical impact of the closure on the state.

During a hearing in Albany, lawmakers from both parties also wanted to make to sure that local communities would be able to financially weather the closure, according to The Times.

The plant's two reactors are set to cease operation by 2020 with the site closing completely by the following year.

Lawmakers on Tuesday directed their questions at officials from the state and from Entergy Corp., Indian Point's owners.

Local legislators were among the most concerned, according to The Times, which reported that Republican state Sen. Terrence Murphy questioned officials about Entergy's commitment to helping more than 1,000 people find new jobs.
