To mark the occasion, the hospital's leadership joined the Emergency Department’s board-certified physicians, magnet nurses and staff for a celebration in the Main Lobby on Tuesday, April 12, attended by 150 well-wishers.
Two Westchester County mothers were on hand to share recent experiences their young sons had when treated by the “No Wait” ER. Laurie Weisz shared how her 11-year-old-son was treated over the summer when a camp visit to a petting zoo earlier in the day led to his experiencing anaphylactic shock soon after she picked him up.
“This hospital saved my son’s life,” Weisz said. She added that the entire staff, from the front desk to the nurses and doctors, was calm and amazing. “Somehow my boys even got ice cream!” she said.
Eileen Spencer recounted how her 12-year-old son was treated for a sports injury earlier this year. “The Hospital not only lived up to its ‘No Wait’ policy, but surpassed our expectations in efficiency, compassion and complete patient-centered care.”
Also recognized for their outstanding partnership in the care of patients, families and communities were 11 area volunteer ambulance corps and EMTs.The hospital celebrated the anniversary of the state-of-the-art, 24-hour emergency room, which sees 40,000 patients annually, up from 30,000 patients in 2005. Today it is one of the busiest emergency departments in Westchester County, and it is undergoing a $4.2 million renovation that is expected to be completed in the spring of 2017.
“A decade ago, bypassing the waiting area upon arrival in an ER was a novel idea and proudly, we were the first in the region to do so,” said John C. Federspiel, president, NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital. “They said a “No-Wait” ED would never work, but we were and remain committed 10 years later to creating the best emergency care experience for patients and families. We never want someone in distress to wait for care.’’
