Harmon Fire House Fair Shares Fire Prevention Week

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Fire prevention week begins on Oct. 9, and local schools and fire departments will observe the week with drills and reminders about fire safety. In Croton, the Harmon Fire House will host a fire prevention week fair, where kids can earn a ride on the fire truck.

The 30th annual fire prevention week fair at the Harmon Fire House will have free hotdogs, popcorn, beverages and lessons about fire prevention.

“Anything to do with kids, my face hurts from smiling so much,” said Thomas “Tex” Dinkler, former fire chief, who will celebrate his 44th year at the fire department at the end of October. His son, Philip Dinkler, is now the fire chief, and his grandson is also a volunteer firefighter in Croton.

This year’s fire prevention week theme is “protect your family from fire,” and although Dinkler jokes about his love of children, he turns serious when discussing fire prevention. “You have to have a drill,” he said about family escape plans. He noted that when his sons were young they ran drills using a collapsible ladder, so the kids felt comfortable using the equipment in case of an emergency.

Some of the activities at the Harmon Fire House on Sunday include “stop, drop and roll” drills, what to do if a smoke detector goes off when you’re in bed, and using collapsible ladders. Although the fair is geared toward younger children, all ages will have a chance to learn at the fair. After five simple learning stations, children can earn a ride on the fire truck.

“A thank you to all of our firefighters in our Cortlandt community,” said Town of Cortlandt Supervisor Linda Puglisi. “They dedicate and devote their lives to helping others and saving lives.  Also, the educational programs they have during fire prevention week and month are very important, especially for our children.”

The Harmon Fire House is located in the Village of Croton, on the corner of Wayne Street and Benedict Boulevard. The fair will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
