Halloween Could be Cancelled in Croton

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Village officials are considering asking parents not to bring their children trick-or-treating Monday night as a matter of public safety. Dozens of trees and wires are down throughout the village and about a quarter of Croton-on-Hudson still has no power.

“Brook Street looks like a war zone. We’ve actually asked Con Edison to put it on top priority because it’s a safety issue, we had trees down throughout the village," said village manager Abraham Zambrano. "Hessian Hills Road was hit pretty bad, there was a group of residents who could not get out of their houses because of the trees were resting on the power lines. As you know we were hit pretty hard.”

Croton Police have advised parents not to bring their children trick-or-treating in neighborhoods that are without power. Village officials are looking to see if wires are still down in streets. Residents should treat wires down in streets as if they were live and do not go near them.

Wires down on Brook Street, where a transformer snapped off its telephone pole, carry some of the primary power for the village.

“We had a lot of trees down or partially down on the primary lines. That’s always an issue because there’s quite a bit of power going through those lines,” said Zambrano.

According to Con Edison’s estimates, 944 residents in the village of the 3,629 served, or about 26 percent, are without power.

The village has opened a warming center in the basement of the municipal building, the community room. The municipal building is located at 1 Van Wyck St. Residents can also charge their phones and computers there.

Village officials said they will make a determination as to whether parents should bring their children trick-or-treating by late Monday afternoon. Stay posted for further information on Halloween events.
