First Weekend in October Rings in Fall Festivals

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – The first weekend of fall is upon us, and the festival and pumpkin painting have begun. If the weather holds out, there will be a slew of fall activities, including the first nights of Van Cortlandt Manor's Jack O'Lantern Blaze, the Croton Rotary Club annual car show, and Stone Barn’s annual Harvest Fest. The biggest event this weekend, by far, is Support Connection's "Support-A-Walk" in FDR State Park in Yorktown. That event attracts thousands of people for the first weekend of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Saturday, October 1

Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze The Jack O'Lantern Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor begins Saturday evening and runs through November 6 this year. Over 4,000 hand carved Jack O'Lanterns will be on the property, this event is the largest pumpkin related event in the Hudson Valley, attracting over 80,000 people over the course of the month. Food Pantry Collection Members of the Yorktown American Legion Post #1009 will have tables set up outside of the Shrub Oak A&P Supermarket, to collect donations of non-perishable food items. Volunteers will be at the A&P from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The A&P is located in the Triangle Shopping Center, on East Main Street, Yorktown. Found Object Jewelry Go through you dresser drawers and bring a selection of buttons, cequins, beads or fabrics to participate in this jewelry-making class. Instructor Phyllis Ger also provides an extensive selection of objects. The class starts at 2 p.m. at the Croton Free Library. Registration is required, call (914) 271-6612. The library is located at 171 Cleveland Drive, Croton.

Men Who Cook People can choose from over 60 dishes for $20, presented by the City of Peekskill, to highlight the positive role men play in the city. All proceeds benefit the Peekskill Youth Bureau. The event starts at 4:30 p.m. and runs until 7:30 p.m., and is located at 828 Main St., Peekskill. Contact (914) 737-8418 for more information.

Pumpkin Painting Hilltop Hanover Farms supplies brushes and paint to anyone buying a pumpkin, for free pumpkin painting. Visit Hilltop Hanover’s website for more information.

Harvest Fest at Stone Barns From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stones Barns will host a harvest party, with hay rides, live entertainment by Dan Zanes and Friends, and Spuyten Duyvil, and a farmer's market. There will also be farming education. Visit their website for more information and tickets.

On the Wing Seaonal migration for hawks, falcons and other birds is underway, and Croton and Teatown are directly underneath one of the biggest bird super highways on the Northeast, the Atlantic Flyway. Sunday October 2

Support Connection Walk-a-Thon Join Support Connection in FDR Park for the Walk-a-Thon to support people who have been affected by breast and ovarian cancer. Support Connection provides free services to these individuals. Each year thousands gather in the park, on the first weekend of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pre-walk activities begin at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. FDR Park is located off Route 202 and the Taconic State Parkway. Visit The Daily Yorktown for more information. 

Croton Rotary Annual Car Show The Croton Rotary Club's biggest fundraiser of the year is at Croton-Harmon Station, where more than 100 muscle, antique and hybrid cars show up to duke it out for trophies. This year's event will have a chili cook off between four local restaurants.

Walking Tour of Croton Dam This walking tour is sponsored by the St. Vincent DePaul Society, of Ossining. The walk will begin at 1 p.m. and goes until 5 p.m. The walk begins at Eagle Park, on Route 9 in Ossining. Call (914) 493-TICK (8425) for more information.
