Facebook Policy Could Make March Agenda in Cortlandt

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – A Facebook policy will likely make its way to the Town of Cortlandt, after town officials discussed using social media as a way to circulate information to residents.

Cortlandt Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi appeared most in favor of using the social media site at a board work session Monday, Jan. 30.

“We’re constantly thinking of ways to disseminate our town information better, faster,” Puglisi said.

The discussion of using Facebook as a way to distribute information was brought about when town officials discovered someone had already set up a Town of Cortlandt group page with 36 members. The inactive group page’s most recent post is from June of 2011.

After technology advisor to the town, Matt Logerfo, did some additional research on whether other municipalities were exploring Facebook, he said, “I have been looking around and not a lot of towns are doing anything.”

Some members of the town board seemed to struggle to understand the pros of using social media, including Ann Lindau, who said she’s never been on Facebook.

Other board members assured Lindau that the public did not necessarily need to allow public comment on the page, if one were to be created. Town board member John Sloan said the service is “almost ubiquitous.” It was suggested that the town could resolve to review the Facebook policy after six months.

The town already uses a “Code Red” system to disseminate information in the event of an emergency, such as a hurricane. The Code Red system is a “high speed emergency telephone notification” system, according to the town website.
