Dobbs Ferry Turns Back Croton in Mayclim Final

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. –  Dobbs Ferry opened a big lead, let it slip away, then used a big fourth quarter to pull away in a 69-51 victory Saturday in the boys’ championship game of the 31st William Mayclim Basketball Tournament at Croton High School.

“We got away from out offensive plan at one point in the third quarter and Croton is a good disciplined team and came back on us,” Dobbs Ferry coach Scott Patrillo said. “But we made adjustments and did what good teams do in close games. We have a lot of versatility and that showed in the fourth quarter.”

The unbeaten Eagles (4-0) won their third straight Mayclim Tournament, while the host Tigers fell to 4-1.

The Eagles, who were led by All-Tournament players Tom Fleming and Eric Paschall, opened with a 22-9 lead into the early second quarter and led 30-21 at halftime. Fleming, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, had a game-high 24 points and Paschall finished with 21.

“Dobbs Ferry is a very good team,” Tigers coach Bill Thom said.  “They play hard and together.  They certainly deserve to be ranked as one of the top teams in class B. I thought we showed poise and effort coming back to cut the score to 42-40. Another basket or two there and we are in a good spot, but they made a good run.”

Tigers’ guard Ian Thom, who finished with 14 points, scored 10 points, including two 3-point bombs and four straight free throws, to help pull Croton back to within 40-38 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Tigers outscored the Eagles 19-14 in the third and trailed 44-40 going to the fourth quarter.

Up 44-40 after three quarters, Dobbs Ferry outscored Croton 25-11 in the fourth to finish the game.

Wes Turner led the Tigers with 15 points and was named to the All-Tournament team. Tyler Gilman added 10 points for Croton.
