Croton Welcomes First Outdoor Market of the Season

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The first day of the outdoor Croton farmers market was met with warm, late-May weather on Wednesday.

The transition from the indoor winter market to the outdoor market was seamless, and Community Markets owner Miriam Haas said, "It's a beautiful day, and we're happy to be back."

The market will run Wednesdays, from 12:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m., through the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. There were 11 vendors present Wednesday afternoon, but there will be 12 total, after the late arrival of Stone and Thistle, a meat, egg and prepared-food vendor.

New vendors include Go-Go Pops, Flour City Pasta and John D. Madura Farms, among others. Go-Go Pops are handmade popsicles from Cold Spring, with flavors ranging from lime mojito to chocolate ancho chili. Flour City Pasta makes handmade, traditional dried linguine and fettucine, but also supplies thick-cut savory sweet potato pappardelle and strings of thai chili mafaldine. John D. Madura Farms supply classic veggies, but also gourmet mushrooms and flowers.

"I'm from California and this is the first thing I found in Croton," said Melissa Blundell. The Putnam Valley nanny had Jackson and Sophia Gordy in tow, each with an ice pop. "I'd much rather shop here than at the supermarket," she said.

Croton is Community Markets northern-most market, and also one of the latest running. Market manager and Croton resident, Amy Gardiner, said the market will likely host food, canning and pickling demonstrations similar to those held in 2011.
