Croton Water Main Break Repaired Monday

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Croton Village officials say a water main break in a main artery of the village water system is repaired and water is now flowing freely to the Croton-Harmon train yard and Half Moon Bay residents who have been without water most the day.

Village officials said Croton Police began receiving calls on a lack of water around 5 a.m. Monday morning and the Croton Water Department quickly discovered a 12-inch main had broken under the Route 9 overpass at Municipal Place. The main was repaired just after 4 p.m.

“Some people have experienced brown water issues, but nothing that bad,” said Abraham Zambrano, village manager. He said the village would follow up the main break with water testing, but that village officials were not anticipating any water contamination. He also said hydrants were currently being flushed in response to the main break.

Both Croton-Harmon High School and Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School experienced two hour delays because of insufficient water. Zambrano said the cause of the main break is not known and neither is the age of the main.

“We normally try to determine based on what the pipe looks like,” said Zambrano. He said the break could have been caused by “the vibration from the highway, but this is just speculation on our part.”
