Croton to Create Digital Model of Water System

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – A resolution passed Monday night by the village Board of Trustees will begin the digital mapping of the Croton water system. The contract, awarded to O’Brien and Gere, a civil engineering company with 26 locations on the East Coast, will model the water system in the Village of Croton, allowing the board to see the effect of future proposals.

“This modeling will allow us to predict the likely outcome of future configurations,” said Mayor Leo Wiegman. The resolution to begin the digital modeling process comes one month before a “water forum” will be held regarding proposed anti-corrosive chemical additions to the village’s water supply.

The aging municipal supply faces several problems and mandates, officials said. One of the most unappetizing problems for some residents is a persistent “brown water” problem, which can stain washing machines red.

Mandates include requirements that the village’s water supply, which is sourced from wells under the Croton River, have extended chlorine contact time and that pump house mechanics remain above “100 year” flood levels.

The addition of an anti-corrosive chemical, zinc orthophosphate is also on the table, to help with residents' brown water problems. The Board of Trustees will hold a "water forum" on Nov. 2, to discuss the history of the Croton water system and possible solutions for brown water problems and mandates.

“These are the building blocks,” said Wiegman. “We can’t design a new water system unless we model the one we have with all its intricacies.”

Trustee Gallelli added that, “Without this, we would be taking steps in the dark.”
