CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. Croton bargain hunters only have a couple more days to snag deals at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church Rummage Sale. The nearly two week long rummage sale has repeat customers and donors, and one long-time volunteer.
Regina Hertl has been volunteering to run the rummage sale for the last 13 years. She estimated spending as much as 160 hours organizing, selling and advertising for the event. The partial success of the rummage sale, however, she attributes to her daughter.
"What's been really exciting for me, this year is my daughter made a manual," Hertl said about her daughter, Margaret Livingston's bilingual rummage sale marketing plan. The plan was created as part of a Girl Scouts Gold Award project and continues to bring Spanish speaking members of the community into the fold, Hertl said.
The plan is available free of charge on the St. Augustine's website and Hertl said St. Ann's Catholic Church in Ossining is using the manual this year for its rummage sale.
Repeat customer Bari Zieff, wearing a skirt she had purchased at the sale, said, "It's green, I always find a few things to wear." Everything from used Burberry sweaters to toys to desks, dressers and workout equipment was available at the sale. All clothing is $1, toys and furniture are priced as marked.
The rummage sale will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., Saturday, June 2, before Croton's annual street fair, Summerfest. The indoor portion of the sale, which is largely housewares and toys, begins Friday at 9 a.m. Furniture is for sale on the church porch. Housewares donations can only be made until Thursday afternoon.
All leftover donations will be given to African missions and the other charitable organizations.
