Croton Rotary's Annual Car Show a 27 Year Tradition

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Muscle cars to hybrids will be waxed to a high sheen and ready to compete for several trophies at the Croton Rotary Club’s 27th Annual Car Show Sunday at Croton-Harmon Station.

“About 100 cars show up, everything from antiques to muscle cars to trucks,” said Greg Schmidt, Croton Rotary Club president and Croton Trustee. “People love showing their cars, it’s their pride and joy. Some people will do every ounce of work on their car, others pay people to work on them.”

The majority of cars are registered the day of the show because, according to Schmidt, “one hint of rain” and the cars aren’t leaving the garage. This year’s rain date is Oct. 9. The show starts at 12 p.m. and runs until 4 p.m. There will be food and contests for car owners. One of the most popular contests is the “future driver” competition, where only people under 16 can vote for the car they’d best like to drive.

“Little kids pick the car they would love to drive, and their parents would never want them to drive, some chopped up type car that’s barely street legal,” said Schmidt.

Four restaurants will also be present to compete in a chili cook-off.

All of the proceeds of the car show will benefit the Croton Rotary Club, which does local and international charity work. Recent activities of the club include supporting literacy programs at Croton-Harmon Schools and participating in the Gift of Life program in cooperation with the Peekskill Rotary to help a child from a third-world country receive heart surgery.

“They all have a common bond with their cars,” Schmidt said of car enthusiasts, “They’ll all stand out there and talk about their cars, ‘Oh, I had that car when I was a teenager.’”

The fundraiser usually generates between $4,000 and $5,000 for the organization and is the biggest fundraiser of the year. Tickets for individuals are $3, and $5 for families.
