Croton Middle Schoolers Get Graduate Level Tutors

Sixth-graders from Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School in Croton were privy to the help of College of New Rochelle graduate students this year. The program was developed to help students who needed extra help in reading, but was also said to be beneficial for the graduate students who tutored the middle school students.

“The students participated more eagerly and seemed more confident in their reading abilities,” said Dr. Kate Hathaway, Associate Professor of Literacy at the College of New Rochelle, who oversaw the program. “The ultimate benefit for the tutors was to watch the students grow in their reading ability and change in confidence.”

The program selected seven students to work with after school hours, and used word games and other activities over a five session course to help the student process material more efficiently. For example, one day the sixth-graders worked on a segment from a book on wild animals, and later filled out a “Stop-and-Think” activity about how dangerous a hippopotamus can be.

This was the first year the program was available to students, and Dr. Hathaway says she hopes to continue the program in the future.
