Croton-Harmon Offers Grief Counseling to Students

Update, Jan. 5, 3:15 p.m. - This story has been updated to correct the spelling of Celia Sprouse's name.

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Croton-Harmon High School offered grief counseling for students Tuesday, after a young Croton girl was killed in a one-car crash in Port Chester.

“Those students who knew her, who knew of her, are going to be very upset. Unfortunately, there’s been some tragedy, whenever there’s tragedies in a community the school feels that pain as well,” said Edward Fuhrman, Superintendent of Croton-Harmon School District. In October, a Croton-Harmon graduate died in a hiking accident.

Margaret Radford, 17, of Croton-on-Hudson, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which was reported at 9:21 p.m. Radford was driving a silver convertible 1999 BMW 328i when it spun out of control on the ramp from I-287 to I-95 at Exit 22. Both Radford and her passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle with the “jaws of life” machinery.

Celia Sprouse, of Stamford, Conn., was a passenger in the car. Spouse was originally taken to Greenwich Hospital, and was later transferred to Westchester Medical Center. New York State Police say it will take time to time to evaluate the extent of her injuries, but Sgt. John Antonelli said that she sustained severe head trauma. As of noon Monday, Sprouse was responsive.

Radford only attended Croton-Harmon High School for a short time during the 2010-2011 school year. She was primarily home schooled. Only 550 students attend Croton-Harmon High School, there are about 8,000 residents in the entire Village of Croton.

“Croton’s a small community,” said Croton-Harmon High School Principal Alan Capasso. He said that students in the school who may have been friends or acquaintances of Radford were handling the tragic news, “about a good as can be expected.”

According to independent witnesses cited in the report, Radford was traveling at a high rate of speed for wet road conditions when she spun out of control, went up a hill and the driver’s side of the car struck a tree.
