Croton Fire Department and Santa on Candy Cane Run

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Santa Claus will be driving around the Village of Croton-on-Hudson in a Croton Fire Department engine Saturday morning and afternoon. He will be delivering candy canes and greeting children for pictures throughout the day.

“What we've done is made arrangements with Santa Claus to ride around on the fire apparatus,” said assistant chief of the Croton Fire Department, Thomas “Tex” Dinkler. You might want to cover the kids’ eyes for this part of the story—there are actually three Santas riding around on fire trucks Saturday afternoon.

The department has issued a schedule, posted on the village website, and asks that children who want to see Santa on Saturday wait at their street’s stop before the engine gets there. This will ensure there is enough time for everyone to get a photo with the jolly man in red.

Dinkler says the department has been inviting St. Nick to visit the village in some incarnation for years. “Basically we’ve been doing different versions of the same thing, going way back,” he said. This is the third year the man in the red suit will ride through the town on a fire engine.

When the event was initially started, for those who remember, A&P was still in the Croton Commons shopping center. The bearded icon usually sits in front of the grocery story and children would go visit him.

He will be delivering candy canes throughout the village until about just after 4 p.m. Be sure to check when your street will see Santa.

Friday is also the last day to deliver mail for Santa to the village Recreation Department. All mail delivered to Santa, with a return address, is guaranteed a response if turned in by Friday.
