CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. The last days of the holiday shopping season are upon us, and Hanukkah has already begun. Small businesses are offering a variety of discounts and extended hours to accommodate busy holiday schedules. Residents can find everything from locally carved and cast silver and gold jewelry, to scarves and craft kits starting under $20.
Everyone has their own price point in mind, said Jennifer Rutheny, owner of Ruthenys Jewelry in Croton. The store specializes in handmade custom metal work, with prices ranging from $5 to $5,000. Five-year-old boys buy a $5 pair of earrings and husbands, for a Christmas gift, buy something extra special, she said.
Some retail shops, like the Flat Iron Gallery in Peekskill, have extended their hours. The shop sells fine art pieces large and small and is open from noon until 6 p.m. until Christmas Eve on Saturday. The shop also offers gift wrapping.
Its SWAK (Sealed With a Kiss) in Montrose sells a variety of moderately priced scarves, gloves and dresses, primarily for girls in their tweens. Check out their new texting mittens on Facebook. The owner of Its SWAK makes a point of ordering a limited number of dresses, one in each size, so that girls in Cortlandt Manor dont end up with the same outfit.
Groovy on Grand in Croton also specializes in gifts for tweens. Groovy on Grand also offers classes during the holidays, for kids to design their own gifts or clothing. T-shirt decorating kits are available for as little as $20.
If youre looking to fulfill gifts for the food lovers on your list, try Tuttles Homemade holiday pies. The pies are available at Grouchy Gabes Deli in Croton, and cost between $20 and $25. A family could easily get 10 slices out of the slightly larger, holiday versions, of Tuttles normal pies. Tuttles sells only local, fresh ingredients, with everything from a dried cherry, apple and pecan filling to humble pie.
The Black Cow in Croton roasts their beans in store, claiming that it guarantees a fresh coffee flavor. Pounds run around $12, and gift certificates are available.
Deprez Wines in Croton offers holiday specials on cases of wine, there is a 10 percent off coupon available on the stores website. With a purchase of $100, the store will deliver within a 10 mile radius of Croton-on-Hudson.
