Cortlandt Engine Co. Bazaar in Full Swing

The Cortlandt Engine Company’s Annual Bazaar was in full swing starting Thursday and continuing until about midnight Saturday – culminating into a parade.

The fair is a classic neighborhood event, where ride tickets only cost $1, and there is a vast array of inexpensive homemade food and games lasting well into the night. The Ladies Auxiliary Club runs a homemade pizza and zeppole booth, while the men of the Cortlandt Engine Company serve up hamburgers, hotdogs, and sausage and pepper sandwiches.

The Cortlandt Engine Company does not have a specific monetary goal but Assistant Chief Brian Barry says “it varies every year because of the weather.” According to weather predictions, this weekend should be warm and sunny.

Johnny Jackson, a volunteer firefighter for 46 years, helps cook hotdogs and hamburgers while he recalls the bazaar’s old location across the street. “We used to have to carry all the tents up from the basement.” The firefighters built most of the booths that are used at bazaar, and Jackson laughed as he said “we all became masons.”

Jordan Porter, 6, comes every year to the bazaar because her father is a firefighter in the company. Porter said she likes the event "because it's my birthday," he shared.

The bazaar is located at the corner of Kings Ferry Road and Albany Post Road in Montrose, behind the Montrose firehouse. There are various rides including a mechanical swing and a carousel. Ride tickets are $1. Raffle tickets are also $1, or 6 for $5, and a drawing for $5,000 and other various prizes, including a Fourth of July picnic, will be raffled off.
