Police: Garrison Man Snatched, Released Elderly Woman's Purse

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – New York State Police said a Garrison man took a woman’s purse off her car seat in a grocery store parking lot and gave it back when she began to scream. The man was charged with felony attempted grand larceny.

According to New York State Police Investigator Sean J. Morgan, Devin P. Gallagher, 25, of Garrison, snatched a 67-year-old woman’s purse from the seat of her car while she was loading groceries into her vehicle, in the parking lot of Shoprite on Route 6. When the woman began to scream, police said several people came to her aid and Gallagher gave the purse back before fleeing the scene.

Police said they were able to use eyewitness accounts to get a detailed description of the getaway vehicle, the suspect and where he might be staying. Police setup surveillance at the residence and when the suspect came out of the home, he was arrested.

Morgan called it a “crime of opportunity.” The woman’s purse contained credit cards, making the larceny charge a felony. Gallagher was arraigned in Croton Village Court and was remanded to Westchester County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail. He is due in Cortlandt Town Justice Court on Monday at 9 a.m.

The arrest was made by Morgan and Brian J. Landsman.
