Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary's Unique Graduation

CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- The sun peeked out from behind the clouds for Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary students to celebrate their “moving up” pool party. Students were served food and enjoyed the pool at the Cortlandt Yacht Club for precious moments of sunshine.

“We work on it all year,” said Shari Munitz, about the Fifth Grade Committee, which plans and helps fundraise for the pool party of 55 students. The reception came after the “moving up” ceremony, during which Principal Lynda Hall addressed the audience of elementary school students, parents and teachers for the last time as principal, she will retire this year. Joshua Cohen will take her place for the upcoming school year. Three teachers and an aid also retired from Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary this year.

"[This school has a] really nice mix of people and a dedicated teaching staff,” said Munitz, adding that it was “bittersweet.” The students of Buchanan-Verplanck were sad to leave behind single classrooms, according to Cassie Laureti, a “moving up” fifth grade student, but excited for other things. For Chloe Stewart, another soon-to-be sixth grader, those things included “lockers, and getting to meet people from other elementary schools.”

About her experiences at Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary, retiring Principal Hall said, “This is a great community of parents.” She continued that parents were “very supportive, real partners in their children’s education.”
