Blue Mountain Middle School Grads Look Ahead

CORTLANDT, N.Y.-- Blue Mountain Middle School Eighth Graders enjoyed a moment in the spotlight last night, as friends, family, teachers and administration came out to salute their upcoming year in high school. A juice and cookie reception with live band put on by the Parent-Teacher Association seemed to be enjoyed by all.

“We’re half way through school,” said Amy Jacobson, an eighth grade student. This is the first class that Principal John Owens has seen through all three grade levels, from sixth to eighth. “It’s unique seeing them come in waist high,” he said, “and now there’s a young man who couldn’t ride the mouse coaster at Playland because he’s six-two.” The height limit at the mouse coaster as Playland is six feet tall.

“The school has come together in very special ways,” said Superintendent Daniel McCann. “Every year they’ve improved academically, and discipline has improved.” The school’s latest administrative team, of Principal Owens and Vice Principal Jonathan Brown, will also say goodbye this year, as Brown moves on to become the principal of Highlands Middle School in White Plains.

“It’s interesting to watch the maturation process,” said Brown, who is in charge of discipline. He also said he finds it interesting when students give him gifts. “I get gifts at the end of the year, and at Christmas, and you don’t expect that in this position. Today a kid brought me a bowl full of goldfish.”

As the gymnasium crowd, from bleachers to basketball court, fanned themselves with programs to stay cool on the humid evening, Owens began the ceremony by addressing the students. “You demonstrated an energetic desire to help others in your time at Blue Mountain,” he said. “I will miss you when you leave.”
