Yorktown Restaurateur Celebrates Local Athletes

Tom Cuomo considers being an integral part of the community his responsibility as a local business owner. That's why the chef and owner of Don Tommaso's in Yorktown hosts regular happenings at his restaurant to give back to the neighborhood.

A football alum from Yorktown High School, Cuomo has created a number of events tied to the athletic teams in Yorktown. “It was always my plan to get involved with athletics,” he said.

The restaurant, which opened last spring, sponsors dinners to celebrate teams and individual athletes. Cuomo said he is working with the athletic department in Yorktown to create seasonal awards for local teams and monthly awards for individuals. The scholar-athlete of the month receives a dinner at the restaurant for the athlete and family.

“It is just nice to see that their hard work is recognized,” Cuomo said. Also a football player through college, he said he knows how hard it is to dedicate time to both sports and school.

Cuomo graduated from Rennselear Polytechnic Insttitute (RPI) with a degree in engineering, but after a couple of years he decided to go back to the restaurant business. He said he used to work his family's restaurant, Pizza Beat in Yonkers, when he was a teen, but never took it seriously.

Although Don Tommaso's is new, Cuomo has been running restaurants since 2003 when he opened Grappolo’s in Chappaqua. He closed that restaurant this past June to give the new venture his full attention.

Cuomo said patrons can find typical Italian foods and some that are unique to Don Tommaso's. “We like to offer options across the whole board,” he said, listing everything from thin grilled pizzas to a variety of pastas. “I play around and do my own little creations. You can come in and have a salad and pizza or really dine and have a more intricate meal."
