Winter Whiskers Competition Raises Cash for Cancer

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. - February is beard season at the Hudson Valley Hospital Center, as the hospital kicks off its first Winter Whiskers Fundraising Competition for the new Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center. Applications, including a photo of the participant’s clean shaven mug, must be submitted by the end of the week.

“Community support is integral in the success of our campaign to raise funds and awareness for the Cancer Center, and this is a way for all of us to have some fun while supporting an important cause,”  said HVHC President John Federspiel, who was the first to sign up for the challenge. “It’s estimated that within our primary service area, over 650 people will be diagnosed with cancer each year. Community events like these will ensure that we can continue to bring the best services to those who need it most.”

It’s simple to get started. Submit an application along with a $50 entrance donation by Feb. 3 and snap a photo of your clean shaven face to be used as a before photo. Then start seeking sponsors. Participants can be sponsored in a lump sum or per bearded day. For example, a sponsor could donate $2 for each day the participants continues unshaven. If you just can’t take it anymore, you can purchase a “Whisker Waiver” for $50. If anyone, even a stranger on the street, matches that $50, you’re back in the game.

Photos of all participants will be posted on the HVHC page along with competition updates throughout the month. A Beard Bash is in the works for Feb. 27 at The Quiet Man in Peekskill. Awards will be given for “Most Money Raised,” “Wildest Beard,” “Longest Beard,” and “Most Creative Fundraising Tactics.”

On average, a cancer patient makes more than 100 trips to obtain care during their first year of diagnosis and treatment. Cancer patients in the HVHC Center’s service area have driven at least 30 minutes or more to access care, according to the center.
