Verplanck's Dennis Keon, 63, Honored Saturday

VERPLANCK, N.Y. - Dennis Keon, of Verplanck, died Jan. 17 at the age of 63.

He was born Oct. 17, 1948 to Margaret McKeever Keon and Edward J. Keon in Verplanck. Keon was a devout parishioner of St. Patrick's Church in Verplanck as well as an honorary member of the Verplanck Fire Department. He'd often march in the department's parades as well as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel processions.

For over 50 years, Keon participated in programs for special needs community members organized by the Keon Rehabilitation Center. The center was named in memory of his father, who was a founding member.

The "world's biggest Yankee fan," Keon took part in the Special Olympics and programs at Nor West Regional Special Services, receiving awards for his abilities in volleyball, swimming and bowling. He also enjoyed singing, dancing and music.  

Keon was under care of the Holy Comforter Field Home for the last 10 months. His family wishes to thank the staff and patients for their support. 

He is survived by his sisters Rose Ellen Kleinert, Margaret "Peggy" Krachy and Patricia Vitolo, his brothers Edward "Bubby" Keon, Lawrence Keon, Daniel Keon and Thomas Keon. He was predeceased by his sisters Joan Canestra and Miriam Staten.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Cortlandt Funeral Home in Verplanck. The funeral mass will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Patrick's Church.
