Trouble at Treasures and Tales in Croton

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Treasures and Tales could be seeking a new location in Croton after being told to vacate the premises by Feb. 29. The building the funky boutique occupies has been for sale, and recently received an offer. The sale has not been finalized.

“The way that I look at it is everything happens for a reason, so rather than crying and mashing my teeth, while it may be scary it’s an opportunity I have to go with and figure out. So something is presenting itself here, I’m taking advantage of this to redefine and regroup,” said owner Liz Jacobson.

Jacobson is hosting a brainstorming potluck on Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. Jacobson says her intention is to stay in Croton, and help revitalize the village economy. She originally announced the move on Treasures and Tales’ Facebook page on Friday, Jan. 27.

The eviction of Treasures and Tales from its whimsical two story building strikes another nerve in village politics, the long-term vacancy of commercial spaces in the village. The most prominent of which is the former Wondrous Things location on Old Post Road in the upper village.

Jacobson said after contacting the owners of the location, she decided it would be completely untenable for her business, at $12,000 monthly rent.

Some village residents have suggested a vacancy tax be imposed on building owners with long-term vacancies.

Jacobson said she is open to suggestions on viable commercial spaces in the village. Treasures and Tales will maintain its website, where customers can shop virtually.
