School Year Ending, Day Camp Registration Begins in Croton

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Only a couple months are left of the school year for students around the Town of Cortlandt, and day camp sign-up is beginning in Cortlandt and the Village of Croton-on-Hudson.

Day camps sponsored by the town and village are a fraction of the price of commercial day camps, but have had fewer registrations over the past five years.

“About four or five years ago we had easily 110 to 120 kids per session,” said Mark Duncan, Croton Recreation Department supervisor. “The last couple years it’s been around the upper 80s, lower 90s.”

The village offers six weeks of day camp for children as young as 4 years old up to sixth grade, all of which cost less than $800 for village residents. Commercial day camps can cost thousands for vetted and accredited programs which offer a variety of programming. Specialized camps, for example dance or chess camps, can cost in the hundreds for one week.

“For the most part we usually have plenty of room after and continue to take applications, even as the camp's going on,” Duncan said.

Not as many campers might be signing up, but Duncan said camp counselor slots were quickly filled by local teens. He said that for many teens, it is their first job.

The Town of Cortlandt’s Recreation Department day camp is slightly more expensive, and includes busing from the child’s neighborhood to the day camp. The day lasts slightly longer than the school day including busing, from just before 9 a.m. to after 4 p.m.

Recreation brochures for both the Village of Croton and Town of Cortlandt include information for day camp registration, including ages, cost and deadlines. The Town of Cortlandt’s recreation brochure is published the week of April 8.

Croton has already published its spring and summer recreation brochure, and applications for the day camp lottery are due April 11, by noon at the Recreation Department, in the Stanley H. Kellerhouse Municipal Building, 1 Van Wyck St., Croton-on-Hudson.
