RecoveRead Donates 200 Books to Hvhc

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – Grace Ring sat in a hospital bed for long hours, with nothing to do but watch television or choose books from a less than inspiring hospital library. After she recovered from surgery, the 14-year-old returned to her home in Yorktown and started RecoveRead, which donates books to regional hospital libraries.

On Monday, Ring donated 200 books to the Hudson Valley Hospital Center library, all geared toward young adults and children. Dr. Seuss and Junie B. Jones books topped a list of classics. “This is a wonderful gift to children who visit the Emergency Room,’’ said Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Ron Nutovits. “We really appreciate Grace’s efforts.’’

RecoveRead has partnered with Barnes & Noble in Cortlandt over the holiday season. Beginning Nov. 1 the book store started asking patrons if they would like to donate a book to RecoveRead. Some of the books available cost as little as $3. Patrons can donate to the RecoveRead book drive until Dec. 31.

The RecoveRead and Barnes & Noble partnership began last holiday season, when RecoveRead collected 2,500 books to donate to regional hospital libraries. This year, RecoveRead hopes to donate 3,500 books to hospital libraries, from the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, to Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, and HVHC in Cortlandt Manor, among others.

Ring said her favorite books recently were from the “Pretty Little Liars,” series. Grace Ring's mother, Anne Ring, is a Senior Associate Publisher of Main Street Connect in Westchester.
