Local Cyclists Have Plenty of Riding Route Options

Jim Kaufman has been cycling northern Westchester for more than 25 years and figures he's gone more than 100,000 miles by bike. He loves it.

One of Kaufman’s favorite routes is the Titicus loop in North Salem. He rides up Route 100, across Route 138 in Golden's Bridge and over Todd Road in Lewisboro. Safety, he said, isn't an issue for him on the side roads and the loops he does.

"No shoulder? No problem. Drivers up here are polite," he said.

Kaufman, however, does try to stay on roads with lighter traffic. He said the only time he sees drivers get upset is if there are two or more cyclist riding abreast.

Cycling is a passion for Kaufman, who lives in Croton-on-Hudson. He rides a Serrota, custom made by a man in Saratoga Springs, NY. It has a titanium frame and seamless welding points. He bought his bike after paying his son's last college bill.

Ron Grossman has been cycling the area for more than 20 years and has lived in Lewisboro for more than 30. He rides everywhere, but admits sometimes he feels like tossing a rock at crazy drivers who drive too fast around blind curves.

Grossman said he avoids 35, and loves Route 121 and the loop around Mill Road in North Salem.

Another local cycling fan is Bob Fischman from South Salem. He loves the ride from his home down to Pound Ridge and Scott's Corners and likes to find a destination with a deli.

Noah Perl and his father Stephen like to stay off the roads. They enjoy the bike path between Pound Ridge and the town park, though they wish it were longer. Stephen Perl said  that until Noah is older they'll stick to off-road cycling.
