Hvhc Sleep Center Opens After Daylight Saving Time

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – Those tossing, turning and snoring through the night may have more local options available if they choose to seek treatment for their night time restlessness. The Hudson Valley Hospital Center will open a sleep center in less than one week, Monday, March 12.

“Sleep testing is indicated for a myriad of problems such as sleep apnea, sleep walking, night-time seizures, insomnia, restlessness at night and other sleep disorders,” says Debbie Neuendorf, vice president of administration at HVHC. “Often times, people with sleep disturbances may be exhausted during the daytime and fall asleep at inappropriate times during the day because they are not well rested. Sleep disorders also may contribute to the onset of hypertension and obesity.’’

The Center for Disease Control links sleep deprivation to a number of serious preventable diseases, including hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and depression. The National Sleep Awareness Roundtable estimates that between 50 and 70 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders. The CDC also reported that nearly 38 percent of Americans reported unintentionally dozing off during the day, in the last 30 days.

This week was also deemed National Sleep Awareness Week by the National Sleep Foundation, because the week ends in Daylight Savings Time, when all Americans lose one hour of sleep.

The new sleep center is located on the hospital campus, at 1980 Crompond Road, Cortlandt Manor, and will be under the direction of Dr. Charles Abate. The center will offer diagnostic and treatment services for all kinds of sleep disorders.

Dr. Abate specializes in pulmonary and internal medicine and is board certified in sleep medicine. He is medical director of the pulmonary rehabilitation center at Hudson Valley Hospital Center and serves on the hospital’s medical board.
