Hudson Valley Jewelers Showcased at Rutheny's

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – If finding a unique Valentine’s Day gift is on your mind, there’s no need to cruise the Internet. Jewelers from around the Hudson Valley will gather at Rutheny’s Jewelry this weekend to show their wares and celebrate perhaps the biggest jewelry holiday of the year.

“Because it’s once a year, it’s like, people look for this show. There’s other shows with crafts, which pretty much everybody does the shows at the municipal building or at Umami, but this is the only one that’s all jewelers,” said Jennifer Rutheny, owner of Rutheny’s Jewelry.

The show runs from Friday to Tuesday - Valentine's Day. There will be a reception and chance to meet the artists Saturday night at 6 p.m. Live music, wine and refreshments will be served.

A metalsmith for 15 years before opening a shop of her own, Rutheny designs, hand-carves and casts objects of every variety imaginable into silver, gold and pewter. Although she specializes in the flora and fauna of northern Westchester, Rutheny has carved cruise ships and created custom metal books for her customers.

Other jewelers at the Jewelry Extravaganza will showcase everything from intricate folded paper jewelry, Yoshimi Arai, to Tara Marean’s fused glass and sterling jewelry. There will be a total of eight jewelers at the show.

Valentine’s Day consumers are expected to spend north of $17 billion on all sorts of gifts for their special someone, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation. Men are expected to spend $168.74 on Valentine’s gifts, nearly twice what women spend, and people will spend nearly as much on the pets as they do on their friends, at about $4.52 for furry companions, and $6.92 for human friends.
