Less than a week after Lisa DeSousa-Morgan delivered Easter baskets to the food pantry at St. Marys Church in Mohegan Lake, she was already onto her next volunteer project.
She recently started collecting donations for a food drive that will benefit the Feinstein Foundation Million Dollar Challenge. For every dollar and pound of food thats donated, the organization will increase its financial contributions to the different charities it serves.
DeSousa-Morgan said her coworkers in Montrose have been instrumental in serving this mission as well as others she has launched in the past.
While it is my job, the company has allowed me to use it as a springboard to do what I feel is my true calling, she said.
About every month, DeSousa-Morgan gathers her family and friends to contribute to a different cause. Last December, that meant donating food and clothing to a holiday drive at St. Mary's Church. Her own children and neighbors even sang Christmas carols to locals waiting on line, which she said taught them a valuable lesson on the importance of helping those who are less fortunate.
My three kids are involved in every sport and activity and I think its important for them to realize that not everyone is able to do that, she said.
DeSousa-Morgans donations are not just limited to food and clothing, though. Last September, she heeded a request from the food pantry to contribute folders, pencils and other school supplies. Now this June, locals will be asked to hand over household items to benefit the Purple Heart Society, an organization whose goal is to serve past war veterans.
