Cortlandt's First Female Clerk Harriet Boyle dies

VERPLANCK, N.Y. - Harriet Laug Boyle, of Verplanck, died Dec. 6 at Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne, surrounded by her family and the Dominican Sisters of Rosary Hill. She was 81.

Mrs. Boyle was the first woman to hold elected office in the history of Cortlandt, where she served as Town Clerk for many years.

A lifelong resident of Seventh Street, she was born Oct. 9, 1930 to Harry and Rose Laug. She graduated from Hendrick Hudson High School and worked briefly at Standards Brands before beginning a 38-year long career with the Town of Cortlandt.

She retired from the town in 1997 but remained active in the Verplanck and Cortlandt communities despite facing many health challenges over the course of her life. 

Boyle was a lifelong parishioner of St. Patrick's Church. She enjoyed writing poetry for her friends and family to enjoy, as well as a never-ending interest in local and national politics.

Her family would like to acknowledge the care and support Mrs. Boyle received from the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne during her final days. 

She is survived by her daughters Rosemary (Dennis) Lasher and Laurie Boyle DeCicco, her brother Fred (Vera) Laug and Walter (Marianne) Laug and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Boyle in 1990.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Cortlandt Funeral Home in Verplanck. The funeral mass will take place at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church on Saturday.
