Cortlandt Vendors Buzzing With Holiday Customers

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Cortlandt vendors are buzzing in preparation for Friday’s Passover Seder and Sunday’s Easter dinner.

Laura DeMaria, of Hemlock Hill Farm in Cortlandt, said she couldn’t stop to answer reporter questions Thursday morning, because she had a line “to the door” of customers. Susan O’Keefe, of Baked By Susan in Croton, said she’s gone through 300 pounds of flour, 150 pounds of sugar and more than 700 eggs preparing cookies, cakes, cupcakes and caramel matzo crunch.

“It’s one of the busy holidays, it’s not as busy as Thanksgiving, but it’s busy because there are two,” O’Keefe said about the back-to-back holidays.

Hemlock Hill Farm is no longer taking orders for Easter lamb, ham or other fresh meats, but the farm store has locally sourced cheddar cheese and eggs available. Potatoes, onions and garlic are available at the farm store, but other vegetables are still sparse since it’s early in the growing season.

The Croton Farmers Market, in the Van Wyck Shopping Center, will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. for last minute shoppers. O’Keefe said she’s expecting a “jamming” market on Saturday.

Employees of Community Markets, which operates the Croton Market, said they’ll have Easter specialties like hams and bread bunnies. O’Keefe said she’ll be bringing the caramel matzo crunch to the market. If you’re coloring eggs, Feather Ridge Farm, one of the Croton indoor market’s vendors, said brown eggs make the most vibrant colors.
