Cortlandt Manor Author, Psychologist, Genis Dies

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. -- Alice Genis, of Cortlandt Manor, died Feb. 28. She was 85.

A Holocaust survivor, she was born in Poland in 1926 to Nochem and Miriam Singer and immigrated to the United States in 1951. In 2011, Genis published "I Won't Die Hungry," on her experiences during the Holocaust. She was a recipient of the New York Award Israel Bonds and Westchester Hadassh's Woman of Merit.

Genis held a doctorate in dental surgery from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, bachelors and master's degrees in psychology and certifications as a school psychologist and biofeedback therapist. She volunteered for the Peekskill Hospital Auxiliary, Westchester Heart Fund and Westchester Region of Hadassah. 

She is survived by her daughter Naomi Mazin, her son Robert Genis and four grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Albert Genis.
