Antoine Bassignani, 86, Cortlandt Army Veteran

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Antoine Bassignani, a longtime Cortlandt resident, died Wednesday, May 9. He was 86.

The son of Toussant and Pascaline Brui Bassignani, he was born Jan. 30, 1926, in Marseilles, France. Antoine Bassignani served in the French merchant marine from 1940 to 1945. He immigrated to the United States and served in the U.S. Army 2nd Armored Division from 1951 to 1953.

After his discharge, Bassignani married Ruth Schoenberg. He was an employee of the FDR veterans hospital in Montrose for many years. He also was a carpenter and an accomplished oil painter.

He is survived by sons Harold (Donna) Bassignani and Ralph (Cynthia) Bassignani; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife in 2008.

Visiting will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Dorsey-Carlone Funeral Home in Peekskill. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hudson Valley Hospital Foundation.
