New Procedure Could Relieve Sinusitis Sufferers

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – About 37 million Americans suffer with sinus infections each year. The condition, known as sinusitis, or swelling of the sinuses, causes headaches, fatigue and congestion. A new procedure, available at Hudson Valley Hospital Center, could give relief to some lower Hudson Valley residents.

“Many people suffer for years with chronic sinus infections and get only temporary relief using topical nasal steroids and antibiotics,’’ said Dr. Michael Bergstein, an ear, nose and throat doctor who performs the sinuplasty procedure at HVHC. “There are less invasive surgical options that are very successful, but many people are not aware of them. Patients need to educate themselves on the all the options.’’

Sinusplasty uses a small catheter and balloon to quickly open blocked sinuses. The hospital began using the The Balloon Sinuplasty system by Acclarent last year. On Friday, the procedure will be featured on the Dr. Oz show.

The show airs at 4 p.m. on Fox 5. Residents who miss the show can catch another discussion on the procedure on HVHC’s “Health Smart,” cable access program. The show will be broadcast Dec. 21 and Dec. 28 on channel 74, for Cortlandt and Yorktown residents.
