Croton Wine Vendor Recommends Summer Whites

Summer is a time for light fare and refreshing summer cocktails and wines. The grill fires up and the stove shuts down for a couple of months. To reflect the changing menu, Vincent Deprez, owner of Deprez Wine and Spirit in Croton, has offered some suggestions for cool beverages.

Deprez recommends looking for a wine with good acidity.

“Wine with a good lift, but the acidity is the main part,” he said.

To fulfill this register, sauvignon blancs are a common choice, as is pinot grigio, since they can be less “pungent,” according to Deprez.

“Taste wise,” said Deprez, rosés are most similar to whites so they’re also a popular summer choice.

For the adventurous wine drinker, Deprez suggests a chenin blanc. These wines are more versatile than sauvignon blanc, he said, and “more refreshing than chardonnay.”

Other choices that may be off the radar include a Murhalas Vinho Verde, $12, a 2010 vintage from Portugal with a fruity and gingery profile that pairs well with grilled fish or cool shrimp cocktail.

Deprez also recommended an Audebert Bourgueil Rosé, another 2010 vintage from France’s Loire Valley. This rosé would go well with white meats, cold cuts or grilled fish and has a very dry finish.
