Tornado Touched Down In NY For Only Second Time Ever In February: Here's Where
A tornado touched down in New York during a potent storm packed with damaging gusty winds accompanying a cold front last week, the National Weather Service has announced. A damage survey determined the timing to be around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28 in Broome County about 10 miles north of Binghamton in the hamlet of Castle Creek. It had an estimated maximum wind speed of 100 miles per hour. The tornado tracked 0.61 miles, with a width of 150 yards. A weak tornado touched down in Connecticut during an intense thunderstorm over the weekend. The twister touched down in Litchfield County in the town of Roxbury around 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, and lasted for about five minutes, said the National Weather Service. Rated as an EF-0, the weakest on the Enhanced Fujita scale, the damage included large broken tree limbs that started along Minor Bridge Road and moved northwest and uphill before ending near Town Line Road, the weather service said. Strongest Tornado In Eastern US This Week Among 6 Confirmed Twisters In NY
A total of six tornadoes have been confirmed in New York State this week, accounting for 40 percent of the twisters in the Eastern US during separate rounds of storms on Monday, Aug. 7 and Tuesday, Aug. 8. Though five of those six were characterized as being "weak" on the Enhanced Fujita scale, there was one twister rated as "strong," according to the National Weather Service. A tornado touched down in New York State during a round of severe storms this week, the National Weather Service has announced following a survey of the damage. It traveled 11 miles northeasterly in Cortland and Tompkins counties from 5:13 p.m. to 5:36 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7. Its highest wind speed was 90 miles per hour and its maximum width was 200 yards as it moved from the town of Harford in Cortland County to the village of McGraw in Tompkins County. The twister was confirmed on Long Island, in Mattituck in Suffolk County on Sunday night, Sept. 25, the National Weather Service said.
