Authorities were called to the Sterling Bank at 153 S. Library Drive on Tuesday, Feb. 16, after officials there discovered that an ATM had been tampered with, police said.

The skimming device which had been planted on the ATM was removed.

Four days later, a police officer spotted a man lurking in a wooded area near the bank and detained him. A second suspect, who had been sitting in a parking lot nearby was also questioned and taken into custody.

Police said they seized a number of skimming devices from the second suspect’s vehicle.

Arrested were Roberto Lombardi, 35, of Queens, and Daniele Cassano, 31, of Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, police said.

Lombardi and Cassano are the names they provided to police, however, an investigation is under way to determine if the monikers are real, police said.

Lombardi is charged with second-degree criminal mischief, third-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree grand larceny, third-degree identity theft, and possession of forgery devices.

Cassano is charged with third-degree grand larceny, possession of forgery devices, possession of burglar tools, and second-degree possession of a forged instrument.

They both were held at the Rockland County Correctional Facility on $500,000 bail.

Stony Point police are being assisted with the follow-up investigation by state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Police said Lombardi was identified as the subject involved in the original Feb. 16 case in Stony Point and both Lombardi and Cassano have been identified as being involved in two Orangetown cases, police said.

The investigation is continuing and charges are likely to be filed in Orangetown as well, police said.
