Police said they were investigating a possible dispute at 100 Smith Road in the hamlet around 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, when they encountered the man who appeared to be holding a handgun.

The officer deployed his Taser and disarmed the man, who police identified as Valeriy Sokolov.

After Sokolov, 62, was taken into custody, police discovered that he had used the pellet gun to shoot the 75-year-old woman in the head, police said.

The victim, who had a puncture wound in her temple, was taken to Nyack Hospital where she was treated for a non-life threatening injury, police said.

Sokolov was charged with second-degree assault, a felony; second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor; fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor; and second-degree harassment, a violation, police said.

Sokolov is awaiting arraignment, police said.
