According to police, at least five cars had their windows smashed, and property was stolen from four of the cars between 3:30 and 5 p.m.

In each case where property was taken, the victim had left a purse in the vehicle in plain view. The Clarkstown Police Detective Bureau is following up on the larcenies. It is believed similar incidents have occurred elsewhere in Rockland, as well as in neighboring jurisdictions.

The Police Department is urging all residents to make sure they lock their vehicles, and secure any personal items well out of sight if they must be left inside the vehicle. Items such as purses or computers that will enable a thief to gain access to personal information is a particularly troublesome problem.

Residents who become the victim of such a crime, should immediately report the crime to local police, and then change any passwords on accounts that have to do with financial assets, as well as notifying those institutions of the theft.

If you have any information on these thefts, contact the Clarkstown Police Detective Bureau at 845-639-5840, or the main police number 845-639-5800.
