The impostors, O&R said, are calling customers and demanding immediate payment for what they claim are delinquent electric and gas bills.

In some cases, they are even threatening to turn off services or send in the police, O&R said.

The scammers then ask their victims to pay with a prepaid debit card or credit card, O&R said.

Unsuspecting utility customers across the nation have been bilked by similar bogus claims, the utility reported, adding that it fielded several customer reports of attempted telephone scam activity in Orange County on Thursday.

O&R is urging anyone who is contacted in this fashion to break off contact and call O&R Customer Service at 877-434-4100.

New York State Police are warning the public to also be beware of con artists posing as IRS agents for the same reasons.
