New York Blood Center Drive In Congers Deemed A Success

CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. -- Making sure there is enough blood on hand in the case of an emergency is why State Sen. David Carlucci and the New York Blood Center held a blood drive on Monday, to increase the amount of available blood for use.

Held at the Congers Community Center, the drive gave new and repeat donors the opportunity to help build the supply on hand. The need for blood is constant, however, blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather and illness, Carlucci said.

According to the New York Blood Center, one surprise storm last year forced the cancellation of 35 blood drives and resulted in almost 1,400 units of blood not collected. With one in every seven people admitted to a hospital in need of blood, ensuring a healthy supply is essential to the overall health of the community.

"Giving blood is giving life. Together with the New York Blood Center, we held an emergency blood drive that gave new and repeat donors the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of their fellow New Yorkers. I want to thank the Blood Center and all those who came out to donate." said Carlucci.
