Campaign Cash, Name Recognition Help Cuomo Trounce Molinaro For Third Term As Governor
Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New Castle easily defeated Republican Marc Molinaro on Tuesday, according to unofficial returns from the state Board of Elections. With 97 percent of the votes counted, Cuomo led by an unofficial 59 to 37 percent. Cuomo benefitted from a huge campaign war chest, high name recognition and a very strong turnout of Democrats on Tuesday -- estimated as nearly double the turnout in 2014. It will be Cuomo's third four-year term as governor, which in recent years was marred by a pay-to-play corruption scandal. Although Molinaro said he did not vote for Donald Trump in …

Pataki Introduces Molinaro At GOP Convention
Former Gov. George E. Pataki of Garrison, a native of Peekskill where he once served as mayor, introduced Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro on Wednesday at the Republican Party Convention. "We beat the odds in 1994 and will do it again in 2018," Pataki said in this tweet. Pataki was referring to his upset win over then-Gov. Mario Cuomo in 1994. Pataki served three terms as the last Republican governor of New York. Molinaro is expected to face Cuomo's son, Democrat Andrew Cuomo of New Castle, in November's general election. "To our friends in the media who have writ…

Former Deputy Mayor In Westchester Named Molinaro's Running Mate
Republican gubernatorial candidate Marc Molinaro now has a running mate. The Dutchess County Executive announced Sunday afternoon that he has decided on former Rye Deputy Mayor Julie Killian. Killian has twice lost races for the State Senate, including this year when she fell to Shelley Mayer in a special election for Westchester County Executive George Latimer's former seat. Molinaro's selection came after he launched a search committee for the spot in April. He also considered Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo and Islip Town Councilwoman Trish Bergin-Weichbrodt, according to a New …

Dems Gain Numerical State Senate Edge With Two Special Election Wins
http://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/politics/2018/04/24/election-night-bronx-district-32-westchester-district-37-state-senate-special-elections Strong Democratic victories by Democrats in Westchester County and the Bronx give that political party a one-seat Senate majority. But Republicans will stay in charge through the end of the legislative session in June because of an alliance with Democratic Sen. Simcha Felder of Brooklyn. Felder has long sided with the GOP. The most significant race on Tuesday was in Westchester County, where Democratic Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer of Yonkers easily d…

Turnout Seen As Key For Westchester State Senate Special Election
Turnout is typically very low in even the hardest-fought special elections, in part because voters simply don't expect polling places to be open in April. But both sides in the Westchester Senate race are optimistic that people will come out to vote on Tuesday, April 24. The race to fill George Latimer's vacant state Senate seat is the highest-profile race among the 11 legislative special elections to be decided statewide. Turnout is important beyond its role in determining whether Rye Republican Julie Killian or Democratic Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer of Yonkers wins the seat vacated after…

Westchester State Senate Race Among 11 Tuesday Special Elections
A vacant Senate seat in Westchester County is seen as critical to the balance of power in Albany. The race for the 37th District seat is one of 11 special legislative elections on Tuesday, April 24. Democrats have been spending a lot of money to keep the seat vacated by George Latimer when he became Westchester County Executive in January. Latimer has appeared in TV ads for Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer of Yonkers, who is seeking to succeed him. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat from New Castle, campaigned for Mayer in Mamaroneck on Sunday. Her challenger is Julie Killian, a Republican and forme…

The gloves are off and questions from the audience are welcome during the latest debate Wednesday, April 18 in the special election for George Latimer's vacated state Senate seat. Republican Julie Killian of Rye faces Democratic Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer of Yonkers during a 7:30 p.m. debate at Reisinger Auditorium at Sarah Lawrence College. Killian, a former Rye councilwoman is making a second attempt at the 37th District Senate seat vacated by Latimer after he became Westchester County executive in January. The special election is on Tuesday, April 24. The debate is co-sponsored by the…

Race For Latimer's Open State Senate Seat Seen As Key State Bellwether
Control of the state Senate chamber may be determined by the outcome of a special election in Westchester on Tuesday, April 24. Who wins Westchester County Exec George Latimer’s open seat in the 37th District could also be a bellwether for races around the state, indicating whether Democrats can ride "a wave election" in November, according to political observers. Elections will be held for 11 vacant legislative seats, including two in the state Senate on April 24. One of the seats, formerly held by New York City Councilman Ruben Diaz Sr., is in a solidly Democratic district in t…

It's Killian Against Mayer In Special Election For Latimer's Senate Seat
Former Rye councilwoman Julie Killian will make a second attempt at the 37th District Senate seat vacated by George Latimer when he became Westchester County executive. Killian, who ran an unsuccessful challenge to Latimer in 2016 will face Democratic Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer of Yonkers during a special election on April 24. Republican Party members chose Killian, who served six years as a Rye city councilwoman, over former Yonkers inspector general Dan Schorr of White Plains during a small GOP convention at Westchester Manor on Wednesday. The Senate seat has been vacant since Latimer t…
