Deer Pulled From Mud In Dramatic Westchester Rescue
Despite being faced with an unusual situation, firefighters pulled off the successful rescue of a young deer that became stuck in mud in a Westchester pond. The rescue happened in New Rochelle on Thursday, July 11, when firefighters responded to reports of a stuck deer near Pryer Manor Road. After around an hour, firefighters were able to remove the deer from the mud in Mill Pond and reunite it with a deer believed to be its mother who had been watching from a distance. Person Hospitalized After Hitting Deer On Busy Road In Croton-On-Hudson
A serious crash involving a deer resulted in both a person being hospitalized and the brief closure of a busy Northern Westchester road. The incident happened on Thursday, Nov. 23 around 8:30 p.m., when a car struck a deer on the Croton Point overpass on southbound Route 9 in Croton-on-Hudson, according to the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department. With the arrival of fall, there is an increased risk of crashes involving deer, both the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) are warning motorists. Wildlife officials have confirmed the first case of bluetongue virus in New York deer. Testing revealed the virus was present in three deer on Long Island, in Southampton, the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) said. Bluetongue (BT) virus is closely related to the Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) virus and is transmitted in the same way, through the bites of insects called midges, according to wildlife officials. Car Crashes Down Embankment After Woman Swerves To Avoid Deer
A car crashed down an embankment after a woman swerved the vehicle to avoid a deer in the Hudson Valley, according to police. The incident happened early Saturday afternoon, Oct. 3 in Rockland County on Route 202, just west of Mayer Drive in the Village of Montebello. The vehicle rolled over after going down the embanked, Ramapo Police said. Luckily, this driver was not injured. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a warning about “zombie deer disease” that impacts deer, elk and moose. The CDC issued a warning about cases of Chronic Wasting Disease (also known as CWD or the “zombie deer disease”) after several cases cropped up throughout the country. New York continues to be a hotspot for deer hunters, with 2018 marking the third consecutive year that the kill count has increased. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation announced that hunters killed approximately 109,000 deer during hunting season, up from 98,000 last year and 86,000 in 2016.
