Sergeant Collapses, Dies Moments After Shift In Hudson Valley: 'Good Man Who Will Be Missed' A Hudson Valley police department is mourning the line-of-duty loss of a beloved sergeant who collapsed and died mere moments after completing his shift.  In a statement on Saturday, April 20, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office announced the death of Brewster Police Sergeant Richard Gurniak, who collapsed after hanging up his keys after his shift during the early morning hours on Saturday.  Despite efforts to save his life from a fellow Brewster officer and two members of the Sheriff's Office, Gurniak later died at Putnam Hospital from a heart attack at the age of 57. Man Caught In Area After Stealing Items From Unlocked Cars Two vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed in the Town of Southeast ended with one of the drivers behind bars for stealing items from unlocked vehicles. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office reported that after one of their officers spotted the two speeding cars on March 4 around 2:45 a.m., it took help from the New York State Police and the Brewster Police Department before both were stopped and a 20-year-old Danbury resident was in cuffs.
