Teaches Hones Hoop Skills in Irvington, Tarrytown

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Teaches Hoops Basketball founder Terry Teachout has been on the job coaching Westchester County basketball players for more than two decades and this summer the skills and drills continue at camps in Irvington, Chappaqua, Armonk, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.

“We‘re excited about our camps in Irvington, Chappaqua, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, where the communities have been very responsive to the programs,” Teachout said. “And our David Lee camp in Chappaqua has been one of our most successful ventures.”

Teachout, the president and founder of Teaches Basketball Camps, starred at Duquesne University. During his tenure at Duquesne he played on two NIT Tournament teams. He has grown the Teaches programs to the largest of its kind in New York through player development and focus on fundamentals.

Teachout currently trains NBA players year round. Teaches began its association with the New York Knicks, and current Golden state Warriors forward David Lee, in 2006 with the annual David Lee Camp in Chappaqua. This year’s David Lee Camp will be held at Chappaqua’s Bell Middle School from August 8 through 12.

Greenburgh’s Drew Watson, former varsity coach at Hamilton High School and Valhalla varsity coach Dave Greiner are also on the Teaches staff. Teachout also touts the ‘Summer Basketball Sleep-Away Boot Camp,’ which is a skills and physical fitness training program held in upstate Camp Lakota in Wurtsburg, N.Y. from August 23 through 26.

“The boot camp is really intense and gets kids prepared for their high school season,” Teachout said. “It’s a go-all-out workout.”

Irvington High School will host a Teaches camp August 8 through 12 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sleepy Hollow High School hosts a Teaches camp July 11 through 15 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Armonk’s St. Peter’s Church camp, which includes a girls only camp, runs July 18 through 22 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Horace Greeley High School’s camp will be held 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Chappaqua’s Bell School camp is set for August 8 through 12 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Bell School will host a soccer camp August 22 through 26 from 9 a.m. to noon.

There is also a Teaches lacrosse camp that runs July 25 through 29 at Tarrytown Kingsland Park from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Camper’s fees run from $160 to $450 for the sleep-away camp. For more information, log on at Teacheshoops.com or call 914-238-0278.
